Orthodontics

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialized form of dentistry focusing on diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial abnormality. Orthodontics focuses on the proper positioning of teeth and jaws. Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This can result in decay, gum disease and tooth loss.

What are the benefits of orthodontic evaluation?

Evaluation at a young age provides both timely detection of problems and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. Early intervention provides for lesser chance of problems to occur later in life. If orthodontic treatment is not necessary, our doctor can carefully monitor growth and development allowing for time to begin treatment when it is ideal.

If orthodontic treatment is needed, what appliances will be used?

Each treatment and case is unique to each patient. The treatment plan is individualized and caters to the patients needs. Many appliances used to promote ideal function include (but not limited to): brackets, wires and expanders.

How long does treatment last?

The longevity of treatment and the time a patient wears braces depends on many factors. As stated, each orthodontic case is unique and depends on what suites the individual patient. Patient cooperation is another key factor that may determine the time needed to complete treatment. If a patient does not cooperate with doctor instructions, good oral hygiene, etc then treatment may not be completed. Oral hygiene is very important to the success of the orthodontic treatment!
